FIREWISE YOU CAN USE

3 ::Assess your awareness and preparedness

It is important to start your preparations well in advance of the veldfire season. Make an accurate analysis and prepare a plan to suit your individual household. We have provided a checklist to assist you. However, there may be some issues not covered, so your particular situation needs careful assessment.

4 ::Checklist to assess your risk

Do you and your family know how to call for help? When a fire is detected, call 107 from a landline in the Cape Metropolitan Area, or 021 - 480 7715 from a cellphone immediately.
Are you close to a large open natural area or do you live on the urban fringe that is at risk from veldfires?
Have you reduced the hazards around your home so that it can be defended?
Have you assessed the risk to your property and considered the possibility that your property is a risk to your neighbours?
Do you know which local weather patterns are considered dangerous from a fire point of view?
Have you developed a veldfire and survival plan to assist in the evacuation and defence of your property?
Does everyone in the household understand the plan, including children?
Have you decided if you will evacuate or stay on days of extreme fire danger?
If you have decided to evacuate, do you know where to go?
Are your valuables and important documents packed together for ready access in an emergency?
Have you planned what to do with your pets on a day of extreme fire danger?
Do you have appropriate clothing handy in case you have no time to evacuate safely?
Do you know what is required to protect yourself from the radiant heat of the fire front as it passes through?
