FIREWISE YOU CAN USE

5 ::Be self-reliant

You will need water. An independent water supply in a dam or swimming pool is very helpful. Even a bath or a 200-litre drum filled with rainwater run-off can mean the difference between extinguishing spot fires and losing your home. You must be able to use stored water when you need it - a petrol or diesel-driven pump, hose and buckets are useful.

Plan for a breakdown in telecommunications or electrical supply. Keep your cellphone close at hand. Use a battery-powered radio to monitor the news. A torch will help you work in the dark if there is a power outage. Protective clothing or non-synthetic materials, long pants, long-sleeved or woolen jerseys, wide-brimmed hats, gloves and strong footwear are essential. Try to reduce the amount of exposed skin to avoid minor burns from embers or radiant heat. Woollen blankets can offer extra protection.
