Silvermine and Rondevlei attend MEP training

Tue, 15th December '09

JASA (Junior Achievement South Africa) is a non profit organisation which was formed in 1979 to offer mini business skills to unskilled workforce. Junior achievement mini-enterprise is an educational programme which offers participants the opportunity to participate in the running of a company. It is an experiential programme which simulates a real business. This unique experience provides a realistic view of the world of business, and demonstrates practically how wealth creation occurs and how this benefits society.

With the help of funds received form MTN, Silvermine and Rondevlei have been lucky to attend one of the JASA programmes. Elana Meyer had the opportunity to interact with fire fighters for over the 8 weeks when 45 participants were placed in mini-companies comprising of 15 company members each. They were then required to work through every phase of a real business. Finance was raised through the sale of shares, the taking of loans and a two week credit agreement with JA bank cheque accounts was operated for each mini-company.

The company members fulfilled three roles within each company namely an administrative/management role, a production role and sales. Each participant indicated where their interests lie and they were placed in management positions which will give them the greatest exposure to their talents, interests and skills. The concept of multi-skilling is practised in each company. Positions such as administration find it hard to get a suitable candidate and some of those mini enterprises went through 8 administrators in a period of 8 weeks Market research together with pricing and costing was carried out before a product is selected by each company. Each business wrote a sketchy business plan prior to the start of the manufacturing phase. Planning and control became the baseline of the companies to ensure progress towards company targets.

All company members were required to sell the products which their company manufactures. The stock keepers were kept on toes to make sure that there was not stock that were issued unrecordedCompany meetings were held weekly in which all company members participate. All managers were expected to provide comprehensive feedback with regards the progress of their division. Business plans were reviewed continually.

Each company went into voluntary liquidation in the second last week. All creditors and fixed costs were paid up. Wages and commission on sales was calculated for all company members.

• Subject to profits being made, share capital is returned and dividends are distributed to shareholders.
• The Company must decide on their own social responsibility policy, draw up an ethics statement, adopt their own HR policy and have a clear marketing strategy.
• A company report is compiled by each company.
